The
new work of Eleanor Kotlarik Wang is inspired by turn of the 19th
century documents and memorabilia preserved from her Slovak immigrant family.
TRAVNICE, a collection of folk harvest songs, becomes a tribute to the
women laboring and seeking harmony
in their work and personal lives. Garlands,
a symbol of girlhood and life passages, reflect memories of youthful joy and
play. Text and scores are treated
as iconic images in these mixed media explorations.
Layers of painting, scrubbing, transferring and silk-screening create an
intricate surface that echo the ephemeral and fragile nature of a by-gone era.
In
this collection, the artist’s intent is also to transcend any one era or
culture. It is a reminder that this same need for balance between work and
family is a contemporary issue where the power of companionship and song still
have the ability to enliven and lighten one’s life journey.
Recently,
Kotlarik Wang participated in a group international exhibit called “Journeys
from Home” sponsored by the U.S. Regional Program Office in Bratislava,
Slovakia. The exhibit went on tour
to Poland, Croatia, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The artist also had a solo exhibit June 2004 at the Koloman
Sokol Gallery at the Embassy of Slovakia in Washington, DC. Several of her
paintings are currently on display at the U.S. Consulate in Hong Kong through
the Arts in Embassies Program.
